From Griffin to Global: The High-Flying Journey of Brent “Air Georgia” Petway
Brenton LaJames “Brent” Petway was originally born in Warner Robins, Georgia before later moving to Griffin, Georgia. Of course, music is his passion and he enjoys being a DJ. At Griffin High School playing for the late legendary Head Coach Ferris Quals, Brent was known for his great leaping ability, after blocking a shot, he would run the floor to catch an alley-oop from Kemo Spear and finish with a high flying MONSTER DUNKS!
Brent Petway was ranked among the country’s BEST high school basketball players and track star in the early 2000. He led the Griffin Bears to winning the GHSA State Championships in 2003, then won the State High Jump trophy in track the same year. Brent signed a full basketball scholarship to the University of Michigan under Head Coach Tommy Amiker prior to the start of his senior year. Brent played four years (2003-2007) of college basketball as a Wolverine and earned a bachelors degree in Mass Communications. Because of his great leaping and dunking abilities, Brent was nicknamed “Air Georgia” and competed in the NCAA Dunk Contest finishing as the Runners-Up Champion.
After college, Brent Petway played in the NBA Summer League with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008. He signed with the NBADL Idaho Stampede and played two seasons (2008-2010) where he led the Stampede to be NBA D-League Champions in 2008. Brent also won the NBA D-League Dunk Contest the same year (2008) and NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year (2009). In 2010, Brent Petway joined the Harlem Globetrotters Under the name Thunder Petway. In 2012, he joined the Atlanta Aliens ABA team under Coach Duck Richards temporarily before going overseas to play in Greece where he has had a very successful career winning multiple championships (2012-2018).
