In Loving Memory of Markell Smith

On February 16, 1988, Markell Shy’ree Smith was born in Milledgeville, Georgia. A basketball star destined to inspire many. Known as “Kel” to family and friends, he was the cherished son of Marvin and Luethel Smith.

Kel’s basketball journey began at an early age of 10 years old where he played at the Baldwin County Recreation Department and made the All-Star team. Markell then played at Oak Hill Middle School 6th – 8th grade and was awarded the Most Improved Player. Markell’s excellence continued as he entered Baldwin High School 2004-2007, where he played basketball, baseball and football. In 2007, Baldwin High School advanced to the GHSA State Championship Game and finished Runners-Up.

Upon graduation from high school, Markell’s dedication and skills led him to South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia, where he played a key role in their 2008-2009 Region XVII Championship for the Jets Men’s Basketball Team. After graduation, Markell continued his passion for basketball and became a proud member of the Atlanta Aliens American Basketball Association (ABA) Professional Basketball Team. On November 8, 2014, Markell collapsed on the basketball court during the Aliens home game and died in the arms of Coach Duck Richards.

More than an athlete, Kel was a man of faith, humility and kindness. His legacy extends beyond the court. He was a teammate, a brother, a father, and a role model. Although Markell is no longer here with us, he leaves behind two beautiful daughters (Zhniyah Black age 14 and Maliah Smith age 10) that have the same intensity, the same love and compassion for the game of basketball.
